Six years ago, we began exploring a bold question: What would the ultimate social medium look like?
What if, instead of starting with features or business models, you started with outcomes? The real-world impact you want a platform to have, on people, on the planet, and on society as a whole.
This mindset led us to take a radically different approach; we started at the end and worked backwards. We placed two dots on the horizon, the best possible life for people and the best possible life for our planet and reverse-engineered our way to an app.
To do this right, we needed two guiding frameworks. For people, we looked to the Blue Zones: places in the world where people live significantly longer, healthier and happier lives. These insights became our foundation. We built Follow around five pillars that support human flourishing: An active social life, regular movement, wise nutrition, a good mindset and meaningful rest.
For the planet, we’re co-developing a universal sustainability framework with universities and corporate partners: WEB — Within Earth’s Boundaries. The new WEB is our compass, a way to align algorithms with what the Earth can sustain. This doesn’t mean Follow only features sustainable content, but it does mean we can give more visibility to companies and creators who offer products or experiences that respect the limits of our planet.
We know that building social media, and doing it well, is no small task. Social platforms are made by people, for people, and people are beautifully imperfect. But we’re committed to designing a network that, at every level, is structured to bring out the best in us.
We believe in helping people reach their full potential, by unlocking the good within them and inspiring the best in others.
